Emergent Being

One of my favorite artists is Antoni Tapies. He was a Catalan painter and sculptor. His use of texture really resonates with me. He believed that matter had spirit; so sand, dust, and plaster were often used in layers to evoke meaning. Tapies said “I always remember the Chinese painter who said that you can do a great work of great interest with a single brushstroke. The idea settled in my head and each day I start by doing a single brushstroke. The rest are corrections. I am always correcting what I started.” His work had a meditative quality to it that I think my work does too. This painting started with a single black brushstroke and was sold at my first solo show in 2025!
